It is tutorial time!

In my Instagram stories, I asked you to vote for the next tutorial and it was a tight race between the floral letter and the northern lights edit. But now it is decided:

You will learn how to create a floral letter composite in Photoshop.

To achieve this or a similar result you need Photoshop or another editing program and a photo of a plant with beautiful leaves like this one from unsplash.com. Click on the stock photo to download.

If you do not want to use the same stock, search on your favourite stock photo website or take the picture yourself. You want to have many middle-sized leaves or petals in different directions to achieve that look. When you have found a photo you like, save it to your computer and open Photoshop.

  1. Open a new project. My settings are 4000 x 5000 px and 300 dpi. Different sizes work, too. I use such a big file because I might want to offer prints. For Instagram 1080 x 1350 px and 72 dpi is enough.

  2. Click on File, then Place Embedded and open the leaves photo in your new project.

  3. Click Ctrl+t to transform the picture if it is too small or too big.

  4. Now, use the Horizontal Type Tool and write a letter or a word. Adjust the size and spacing until you are happy with the look.

  5. Press Ctrl and click on the letter to select it.

  6. Mark the leaves photo and click on the mask icon.

  7. Put the letter layer on invisible.

  8. Press alt and click on the layer mask.

  9. Use the magic wand and select the blacks.

  10. Fill the selection with the paint bucket tool with grey.

  11. Press now on the leaves image and you will be able to see through the layer mask.

  12. Click again on the layer mask and paint with a white brush on the leaves that you want to keep showing.

  13. Press alt and layer mask again.

  14. Use the magic wand to select the greys.

  15. Fill the selection with the paint bucket tool with black.

  16. Press on the leaves image to see your result.

  17. Add light leaks or a bokeh overlay, play around with the background colour of your image until you’re happy with the result.
